Documents needed for the application of legalization
Documents issued in the U.K. for use in China’s Mainland , must be legalized by the Chinese Embassy or Consulates in the U.K.. Legalization application must be submitted in person or by an agent, and the following supporting documents are required:

 

1. Completed legalization application form; If legalising Death Certificate, please click the form of Legalization form for Death Certificate.
(Please fill in the necessary information with a computer, print the form out and sign)
 

2. The original documents with Apostille from FCO or its authorized institutions, and copies of the Apostille page.

 

3. Documents of two or more pages must be bound by a silk ribbon and sealed properly by a notary public. Applications with obliterated documents or failing to meet the binding requirements shall not be accepted.

 

4. Any blank page that is contained in documents must be marked with the phrase “No text”.

 

5. Applicant’s valid passport, both original and a photo copy are required.

6. Applications submitted by an authorized individual should be accompanied by the  assignee’s original passport and a photo copy. Applications submitted by an authorized  agent company should be accompanied by an extra authorization letter from the company. 

 

7. For legalizing the “Certificate of Incorporation” of a company, a copy of the company’s legal representative’s passport and documents such as company’s directors' list that can prove the legal representative’s position are required.

 

 

Notices:

 

1. The Chinese Embassy and Consulates in the U.K. will only legalize the genuineness of the seal of  FCO or its authorized institutions and the authorized officer’ s signature, but not of the content of documents.

 

2. At present, the “Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents” applies to Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR, any documents issued in the U.K. with “Apostille” can be used in Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR directly.

 

3. Prior to legalization from the Chinese Embassy or Consulates in the U.K., documents  issued by British Overseas Territories such as “Isle of Man”, “Bailiwick of Jersey” and“Bailiwick of Guernsey” can be legalized with their local institutions authorized by FCO, while documents issued by all other British Overseas Territories such as “British Virgin Islands”, will have to be legalized by Legalization Office of FCO in advance.

4. Applications by post or delivered by courier are not acceptable.

 

5. Once the legalization application has been received, the Chinese Embassy or Consulates in the U.K. will only provide “Pickup Form” to the applicant,no “signed receipt” will be issued.

 

6  Applications with the following issues will not be accepted:

(1) The seal or signature of the document is not true or accurate.

(2) The seal or signature of the document could not be verified through our records.

(3) The document fails to meet requirements for sealing, signature or binding, according to both the documents issuer and user.

(4) Any document issued by domestic institutions in China such as Chinese passport, ID or driving license.

(5) The contents of the documents violate Chinese laws or may impair China’s public interests.

 

7  Documents which were issued in third-countries for use in China’s Mainland , must be legalized by their local authorized institutions, and the Chinese Embassy in those countries.

 
8 Notice for legalising Birth Certificate
(1) Please fill in the child's information as the "Applicant", and attach the child's passport copy.
(2) Please fill in a parent's information as the "Agent", and bring the original passport the the parent.
(3) Both parents should sign in "Signature of the agent" and attach both parents' passport copy. If a parent is not a UK citizen, please also provide a copy of visa or residence permit in the UK.
(4) Original birth certificate with Apostille from FCO, and a copy of birth certificate and the Apostille page.
(5) If both parents cannot attend the visa centre, they may entrust an agent. Please provide an authorization letter signed by both parents, the agent's original passport and the agent's passport copy.

9 Notice for legalising Marriage Certificate
(1) The Applicant (the one who will attend the visa centre) should be the husband or the wife. The applicant needs to bring his/her original passport.
(2) Both husband and wife should sign in "Signature of applicant' and attach both passport copy. If either is not a UK citizen, please also provide a copy of visa or residence permit in the UK.
(3) Original marriage certificate with Apostille from FCO, and a copy of marriage certificate and the Apostille page.
(4) If both the husband and wife cannot attend the visa centre, they may entrust an agent. Please provide an authorization letter signed by both, the agent's original passport and the agent's passport copy.

10 Notice for legalising Death Certificate
(1) Please fill in the information of the deceased and attach the passport copy of the deceased.
(2) The "Agent" should be the spouse, parent, child, grandchild or sister or brother of the deceased. The agent should fill in his/her information in "Agent", sign the application form and bring the original passport, a passport copy and the relationship proof with the deceased.
(3) Original death certificate with Apostille from FCO, and a copy of death certificate and the Apostille page.
(4) If none of the above-mentioned person can attend the visa centre, they may entrust an agent. Please provide a notarized authorization letter signed by one of the above-mentioned, the agent's original passport and the agent's passport copy.
